Cardinal Burke – “Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Kingdom of Christ: The mission of Co-Redemptrix and the Co-Redemptors”
– (10:30 am Rome local time)
Cdl. Burke launched the conference with the keynote speech, delving straight into the currently much discussed topic of Marian co-redemption. The cardinal, an eminent canon lawyer and Mariologist, outlined both the background of Co-Redemptive theology throughout the Church’s history as well as defending the title by employing that same teaching.
He noted that defending the teaching of Mary as Co-Redemptrix is crucial since is lies in the heart of scripture. By denying her this title, he warned that so also Christians would then logically and consequently be denied the title awarded to us in Scripture by St. Paul. St. Paul states that “we are God’s coadjutors,” and that the faithful can “fill up those things that are wanting of the sufferings of Christ.” The Apostle does not mean that Christ’s sacrifice was lacking, but rather that man must suffer with Christ for the sake of his own salvation and that of others.
Cdl. Burke also outlined the Co-redemptrix elements of the apparitions at Guadalupe, pointing also to her mediatory role. Mary’s words to St Juan Diego “manifest her unique and irreplaceable” role in Christ’s salvific plan, he noted. Her apparitions manifested God’s love for all men and were possible due to her preeminent place in receiving the fruits of Christ’s work of salvation. {His full speech can be read in Italian on La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana}
Conference opens and cardinals send greetings
“De Maria numquam satis” opened this morning at the Augustinianum next to the Vatican, an Augustinian building renovated under the oversight of then Augustinian superior general Fr Robert Prevost.
Cardinals Burke and Müller are two of the most prominent clerics speaking at the conference. But a number of others have sent their greetings and well wishes. These include Cardinal Gugerotti – prefect of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches – and Cardinal Fernández – prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
