<em>Amoris Laetitia</em> will take place from October 7 to 14, as early details begin to emerge.</p><p>Now with dates confirmed for the week-long meeting, the presidents of national bishops&#8217; conferences will begin to plan their attendance for October&#8217;s meeting, after Leo announced it in March. </p><p>A recent meeting of the General Secretariat of the Synod finalized October 7 to 14 Secretariat of the Synod.</figcaption></figure></div><p>The General Secretariat was the body responsible for organizing the recent Synod on Synodality, and &#8211; though no official link was made &#8211; January&#8217;s extraordinary consistory bore classic signs of the Secretariat&#8217;s organizational influence.</p><p>Leo has tasked the General Secretariat to &#8220;offer organizational and methodological support,&#8221; while the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has been instructed to bear chief responsibility for preparing the event.</p><p>Given the concern <a href="https://dianemontagna.substack.com/p/the-unexplained-shift-in-pope-leo">expressed</a> by many cardinals over the organizational style of January&#8217;s consistory, in which Synod style round table discussions were used to limit the time for free intervention, there are outstanding questions about how October&#8217;s meeting will unfold and whether time will be granted to air concerns.</p><p>The Vatican has been at pains to point out that the planned meeting between Leo and the bishops is not a synod, but simply an advisory or &#8220;consultative meeting.&#8221; Outside of Leo&#8217;s consistories &#8211; in January and upcoming in June &#8211; the October meeting will be the first such between a pope and only prelates for many years. The Synod on Synodality&#8217;s setup saw the participation of lay people as voting members, and at the time looked likely to be the format used in the future under Pope Francis.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg" width="810" height="500" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:500,&quot;width&quot;:810,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:null,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:null,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:null,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!ZMpU!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F6bbd621d-0d24-4259-ab46-6800c44e8a46_810x500.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a><figcaption class="image-caption">Cardinal Kevin Farrell, prefect of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. &#169;Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life.</figcaption></figure></div><p>October&#8217;s event, however, is a subtle reset back to the normal and proper style of a synod &#8211; He also stated that it was necessary at this particular time &#8220;in light of the changes that continue to impact families.&#8221;</p><p>The meeting marks the 10-year anniversary of the document published by Pope Francis, and which proved to be one of the earliest catalysts for ensuing controversy and doctrinal confusion, due to its passage arguing for the divorced and &#8216;re-married&#8217; to receive Holy Communion.</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.permariam.com/p/synod-office-to-provide-organizational?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Share&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://www.permariam.com/p/synod-office-to-provide-organizational?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share"><span>Share</span></a></p><p>Neither in Leo&#8217;s announcement, nor in the sparing details which have emerged about the October meeting, was any mention made of the controversy surrounding <em>Amoris Laetitia</em>. Similarly, no mention was made of the many requests to have <em>Amoris </em>formally corrected, especially since one of the Dubia signatories &#8211; Cardinal Walter Brandm&#252;ller &#8211; <a href="https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/cardinal-brandmueller-advocates-for-changing-catholic-teaching-on-marriage/">warned</a> in 2015 that the interpretation of <em>Amoris Laetitia</em> which Francis later approved would be heretical.</p><p>Francis declared there was &#8220;no other interpretation&#8221; of <em>Amoris Laetitia </em>except the one provided by the Argentinian bishops of Buenos Aires allowing Communion for the divorced and remarried, and which he supported. This was then <a href="https://www.ncregister.com/news/the-pope-s-endorsement-of-argentina-s-amoris-guidelines-what-it-means">declared</a> &#8211; in a June 2017 rescript &#8211; to be part of the Church&#8217;s magisterium.</p><p>It is precisely this silence about the controversy which has led to such interest from Vatican observers in the October conference, and speculation over whether Leo will simply ignore the problems or address them in his classically subtle style. Should the American Pope leave the issue of Holy Communion and <em>Amoris</em> out of the conversation, then it would appear as an severely lost opportunity to rectify the crisis identified by many, and also undermine his aim to unify the Church.</p><p>Demonstrating the still prevalent tension surrounding the text, a conglomerate of Catholics issued an open letter to Leo in September urging him to rescind a number of papal texts, including <em>Amoris Laetitia</em>. &#8220;We beseech you to annul Pope Francis&#8217;s June 5, 2017 rescript, which conferred special magisterial value on the heterodox interpretation of the ambiguities of <em>Amoris laetitia</em>, and clearly reiterate that those who are divorced and civilly remarried and living <em>more uxorio </em>cannot receive sacramental absolution nor, as public sinners, Holy Communion,&#8221; read the letter.</p><div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;nodeId&quot;:&quot;c6c0ac71-35ae-4b44-8a02-558b058bade5&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) &#8212; Prominent Catholic lay organizations are calling on Pope Leo XIV to take direct action on issues of Catholic morality, including asking him to revoke Fiducia Supplicans and to remove Amoris Laetitia from the Church&#8217;s Magisterium.&quot;,&quot;cta&quot;:&quot;Read full story&quot;,&quot;showBylines&quot;:true,&quot;size&quot;:&quot;sm&quot;,&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Open letter for Pope Leo to rescind same-sex blessings, Amoris Laetitia&quot;,&quot;publishedBylines&quot;:[{&quot;id&quot;:27109546,&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Michael Haynes&quot;,&quot;bio&quot;:&quot;Vatican Correspondent for Pelican Media &amp; PerMariam; Vatican Analyst for Catholic Herald. It has since been renewed a number of times, most recently in 2024 for a period of four years.</p><p>The agreement is believed to recognize the state-approved version of the Catholic Church and allows the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to appoint bishops. The Pope apparently maintains a veto power although in practice it is the CCP <a href="https://www.lifesitenews.com/opinion/pope-francis-empowered-communists-with-magisterial-authority-in-vatican-chi">that has control</a>. It also allegedly allows for the removal and replacement of legitimate bishops by CCP-approved bishops.</p><p>The secrecy of the text has been one of the oft-raised issues about the entire affair. But its chief author, Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin has previously defended this aspect, <a href="https://www.lifesitenews.com/analysis/pope-francis-bows-to-communist-china-and-confirms-bishop-appointed-by-beijing/">attesting</a> in 2023 that such secrecy was &#8220;because it has not yet been finally approved.&#8221;</p><p>HRW has already <a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2025/05/12/holy-see-review-vatican-china-agreement">urged</a> Pope Leo XIV to repeal the deal, and in releasing their report they have renewed this appeal. &#8220;Pope Leo XIV should urgently review the agreement and press Beijing to end the persecution and intimidation of underground churches, clergy, and worshipers.&#8221;</p><p>According to HRW, the deal has &#8220;facilitated repression of Catholics in China.&#8221;</p><p>One former Chinese resident told HRW that the 2018 Sino-Vatican deal &#8220;was used by the Chinese Communist Party as the most intelligent weapon to legally destroy underground churches.&#8221;</p><p>&#8220;In practice,&#8221; the anonymous source stated, &#8220;they arrested priests and bishops from the underground churches and told them: &#8216;The Vatican has ordered you to join the Patriotic Association.&#8217;&#8221;</p><p>This has led many Catholic clergy into the dilemma representing that of the days of persecution in the Roman Empire or in Protestant Reformation England: &#8220;join the Patriotic Association and betray their faith or refuse to join and lose their livelihood and face arrest.&#8221;</p><p>The process of &#8220;Sinicization&#8221; has long been China&#8217;s tool to enforce state-control over the practice of religion. Some have sought to defend the concept, including the current Cardinal-archbishop of Hong Kong, Stephen Chow. But, sources interviewed by HRW said that for China &#8220;Sinicization&#8221; is &#8220;about imposing Chinese Communist Party ideology on religious belief.&#8221;</p><p>Day to day life does not have to entail abduction or torture in order to lead to persecution &#8211; although that does happen. An insider who spoke to HRW commented how one priest was prevented from having any banking, phone sim cards or passports, and hence has &#8220;no means of survival and can barely make ends meet for even a day or two.&#8221;</p><p class="button-wrapper" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.permariam.com/p/human-rights-watch-vatican-china?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Share&quot;,&quot;action&quot;:null,&quot;class&quot;:null}" data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton"><a class="button primary" href="https://www.permariam.com/p/human-rights-watch-vatican-china?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share"><span>Share</span></a></p><p>Pontifical charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has also <a href="https://www.permariam.com/p/religious-freedom-increasingly-disappearing?utm_source=publication-search">highlighted</a> how the Sinicization is being utilized to crush non-approved faith especially amongst the young. &#8220;All this has led to a de facto ban on all religious practice and education for anyone under 18 years of age in China, thus depriving religious communities of their youth development efforts and posing an existential threat to their future,&#8221; ACN reported in the autumn.</p><div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{&quot;nodeId&quot;:&quot;8d24bc32-7fe1-4c4b-abe9-b78d7822e2fa&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;(PerMariam) &#8212; Aid to the Church in Need have documented widespread religious persecution across the globe, highlighting authoritarianism and Jihadism as two of the key issues affecting hundreds of millions today.&quot;,&quot;cta&quot;:&quot;Read full story&quot;,&quot;showBylines&quot;:true,&quot;size&quot;:&quot;sm&quot;,&quot;isEditorNode&quot;:true,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Religious freedom &#8216;increasingly disappearing&#8217; warns Aid to Church in Need&quot;,&quot;publishedBylines&quot;:[{&quot;id&quot;:27109546,&quot;name&quot;:&quot;Michael Haynes&quot;,&quot;bio&quot;:&quot;Vatican Correspondent for Pelican Media &amp; PerMariam; Vatican Analyst for Catholic Herald.
